Norway at Expo 2020 Dubai
Expo 2020 opened in October 2021, a year late because of the Covid pandemic. Innovation Norway was responsible for planning, building, and operating the pavilion on behalf of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries.
Norway – the ocean nation
The pavilion’s theme was Norwegian ocean solutions, and how we can use oceans sustainably as sources of food, transport, and energy. The pavilion itself was designed to take you on a journey from the seabed to the surface and up into space, where the public was presented with solutions within carbon storage, seafood and aquaculture, energy, transport, and ocean monitoring.
The main activities consisted of the pavilion’s exhibition and presentation, internal and external events, meetings, and receptions. In addition to contributing to a positive presentation of Norway, the ocean nation, it helped to strengthen local and international business relations. The Norwegian pavilion also functioned as a relevant and important arena for the 21 financial partners in the Norwegian project.
Good visitor numbers
The Norwegian pavilion welcomed around 425,000 visitors in the six-month period the world exposition lasted. This is considered good seen in the context of the Covid pandemic, which severely limited the number of visitors the pavilion could welcome at any given time. This was particularly true for the first four months of the exposition period.
Given the limited presence of Norwegian businesses in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as well as factors related to the pandemic, it became clear early on that partner recruitment would present challenges. The budget was therefore revised to reflect this.
Many supporters
The Norwegian Expo project was boosted by partner companies that helped with funding and the direction of the pavilion’s content. Among the largest partners were Jotun, Kongsberg, DNV, Equinor, Campus Blå, and Yara, although many smaller companies with a variety of ocean-related solutions also contributed to the project.
Safeguarding labour rights was a key factor in the work on the Norwegian pavilion and Norway’s Expo team at Innovation Norway monitored the entire building process closely in cooperation with the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO).
The exposition ended on 31 March 2022.
