Troms 2006
Growth in the economy in Troms, as with Norway in general,
strengthened in the last year. Employment has increased and
unemployment has declined.
The strongest impulses are in industries such as offshore-oriented
industries, building and construction, and commercial services.
All three are important industries in Troms, and today they are of
greater significance than traditional industry.
The strong growth has resulted in problems finding qualified
manpower for business and industry. This is especially true for
manpower-intensive industries such as travel and tourism. Travel
and tourism is generally a low-wage industry, and increased
competition for manpower may make this industry one of the losers.
The Government’s focus on the northern regions has so far not been
of any major significance to business and industry in Troms. The
Government has set aside NOK 274 million in the 2007 state budget.
Labour immigration appears to be able to solve this problem to
some extent, and for business and industry in Troms it will be
very important that the restrictions on labour immigration from
Russia are reduced.
